This canvas is the sixth in a series of twenty-four paintings on the life of Marie de’ Medici commissioned by the queen herself from Peter Paul Rubens in 1622 to adorn one of the two galleries in the Luxembourg Palace, her newly-built home in Paris. In both scale and subject matter, this cycle is unprecedented. In 1600 the twenty-three-year-old Peter Paul Rubens traveled from his native Antwerp to Italy, and was soon employed as court artist by Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga in Mantua. He spent the next eight years in Italy studying firsthand the works of Raphael, Titian, Michelangelo, and Correggio, among other Renaissance masters, as well as ancient art.
